WALPOLE -- Fire officials are trying to determine what caused the fire and explosion that sent four firefighters to the hospital Tuesday afternoon, but they do not suspect foul play.
As of late Monday evening, three of the four firefighters taken to Norwood Hospital for assorted head injuries and concussions had been treated and released. The fourth was expected to be released shortly, according to Fire Chief Ed Hartmann.
The fire was reported in the basement of the home at 9 Rockwood St. at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday. Hartmann said no residents were hurt, but when firefighters thought they had the fire under control, they noticed a gas leak, which then ignited, blowing out doors and windows of the house.
Hartmann said four firefighters were hurt, but none of the injuries were critical. He would not identify the firefighters.
