Apr 13, 2004 -- David and Margaret Mason of Lovettsville taught their 10 children fire safety during their homeschool lessons because they were aware of the risks of having a large house filled with kids and an active wood stove.

That emergency plan turned out to be a lifesaver for them on April 7 when a fire destroyed their $500,000 three-story home in Lovettsville. The family of 12 was displaced.

The Mason family, includes their 10 children ranging in ages of 3 to 18, is currently staying with friends. There has been a large amount of community support from those who want to help the family.

Loudoun Fire-Rescue Services spokeswoman Mary Maguire said fire and rescue personnel from Lucketts, Lovettsville, Loudoun Rescue, Leesburg and Frederick County, MD, responded to 41470 Lovettsville Road at about 2:30 a.m. and found the house fully engulfed in flames. No one was injured and Maguire praised the family for having an emergency plan in place that each child followed.
