As New Brunswick officials assembled at a City Hall ceremony marking the promotion of two white firefighters, a group of minority firefighters gathered eight blocks away, protesting the lack of African-American and Hispanic officers in the department.

The Vulcan Pioneers, a local chapter of the civil rights organization known as the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters, staged a protest in front of the District 4 firehouse at Suydam Street and Remsen Avenue.

"That is what we are gathered here for, to protest the city's hiring and promotional practices," said Robert Rawls, one of the city's four deputy fire chiefs and a president of the Vulcans.
