Firefighters battled an intense blaze late last night that engulfed a vacant mattress factory in Irvington and spread to the adjacent car repair shop, setting off a series of explosions.

Fueled by strong winds, the fire at the former Perma Form factory at 605 21st St. kept firefighters at bay for hours, said Deputy Fire Chief Patrick Hand.

"The wind caught it and it just took off," he said. "No one went in. The magnitude of the fire was so intense they decided to fight it from the outside."
