The last burning embers of a fire that destroyed the Family Dollar store in Orange were extinguished about 1 p.m. yesterday, more than 20 hours after flames ripped through the building at Scotland Road and Tremont Avenue.
The giant three-alarm blaze caused smoke to billow through the Valley and South Ward sections of the city, required assistance from seven nearby towns and forced police to reroute traffic along side streets, Deputy Fire Chief Marty DeMarzo said.
"Thank God, there were no fatalities" in the fire, first reported at 4:35 p.m. Monday, DeMarzo said. "There were people working and shopping in there at the time."
