A contract worker for the Broward School District was killed Monday morning while working on improvements at Plantation High School, officials said.

Ceranord Siffort, a 43-year-old worker for Padula and Wadsworth Construction Co., died after falling through a rooftop skylight at the high school about 11 a.m., according to the Plantation Fire-Rescue Department. Siffort fell 20 feet into a bathroom under construction.

Padula and Wadsworth were hired in August to make the high school's bathrooms compliant with federal laws meant to provide access to the disabled. The bathroom where Siffort died had been locked up, so no students saw the incident, authorities said.

"Fortunately ... we shielded any sight of it from them," said Pete Tingom, the school's principal.

Siffort and a co-worker had been on the roof working when the pair decided to take a break. Siffort sat on the skylight, which broke under his weight.

Fire-rescue workers had to force the door open to get to him. When they found him, he was already dead, said Battalion Chief Joel Gordon, a spokesman for the department.

School remained in session, although an area of the hallway and courtyard near the incident had to be closed off.

Officials at Padula and Wadsworth could not be reached for comment. The company is listed as the contractor for a project improving the restrooms. The budget for the project is $256,050, according to school district records.
