Surrounded by children, friends and fellow firefighters, Joseph Pepe played basketball at a fund-raiser for his old grammar school in Springfield Friday as he had for many years at the annual event.
Mr. Pepe, a Springfield firefighter, was in his element that day at James Caldwell School when a heart attack sent him to Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Though emergency medical personnel fought to revive him, the 47-year-old Warren Township resident died, leaving behind a legacy of community service and family dedication.
