Wildland firefighters are battling the first "major" wildfire of the season in our state. The Webber fire is burning about 5 miles northeast of Pine, in the Tonto National Forest.

The fire has already charred 600 acres and threatens a nearby Boy Scout camp. No homes are threatened at this time.

Forest spokesman Vincent Picard says the fire is spreading both east and west. It has caused small fires on the nearby Coconino National Forest, on the Mogollon Rim.

The initial attack on the ground includes more than 100 firefighters and 14 engines. Additional firefighters are headed to the scene. Two single engine air tankers and one helicopter are fighting the fire from the air.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials said it was not caused by lightning.
