CROWN POINT -- Indiana State Police say two Lowell-based troopers, two Crown Point firefighters and two motorists were hospitalized this morning after a chain reaction crash that closed northbound Interstate 65 just north of U.S. 231.

Northbound traffic this morning is being diverted onto U.S. 231, causing heavier traffic on surface streets along the I-65 corridor.

State Police Sgt. Ann Wojas told Radio One Communications that the troopers and fire truck unit responded before 7:30 a.m. to an accident involving a car hitting a guard rail. While officers were blocking off the area, a semi-trailer came over the crest of the hill, hitting the fire truck and the back end of one of the squad cars, pushing the squad car into the first officer who responded.

A second semi then came over the hill and hit the fire truck before jackknifing. Another car then crashed into the jackknifed semi.

State police said injuries to the troopers do not appear to be life-threatening. Crown Point Fire Chief Greg DeLor told The Times that Cpt. Len Dunlap and Assistant Chief Gerard Abraham were taken to a hospital, and their injuries also do not appear to be life-threatening.

Conditions of the hospitalized motorists were not available this morning.
