Jackson firefighters spent hours at the scene of a raging apartment fire, with smoke and flames so intense that they could be seen a mile away.

When units arrived at 38 Garden Circle the building was fully engulfed in flames.

Crews were called to the scene at 7:20 Sunday evening.

Firefighters were not sure if anyone was inside.

High winds spread the fire, carrying embers to nearby trees and light poles.

Officials say a fire was reported at the same building last week.

Jackson Fire Department spokesman Capt. R.D. Simpson said, "At this stage we're still trying to get this fire under control so we can make a search and see if anybody was inside. It's believed to be that it was a vacant structure."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
