Two Jersey City families were left homeless after an electrical fire ripped through their second-floor apartment and ignited the cockloft of their two-story building on Tuesday night, said Fire Capt. Andrew Johnson. No injuries were reported, he said.

A second-floor resident of the building on Chapel Avenue near Ludlow Street told firefighters her apartment lights began flickering, then went out, at about 8:45 p.m., Johnson said. A short time later she smelled smoke, grabbed a young family member and ran from the building, Johnson said.

When firefighters arrived, the front living room and cockloft were on fire, Johnson said. Although the blaze was extinguished in 20 minutes, damage done by the fire and firefighting efforts made the apartment inhabitable, Johnson said.
