(Bay Terrace-WABC, February 29, 2004) -- One teen loses her life in a deadly fire in Queens. Two children are critically hurt.

Police are still trying to find out what caused the fire on 215 Street. It wasn't a big fire and there isn't much damage to the home on the outside. But the fire did start on one bedroom on the main floor. But the smoke from this fire was thick and deadly. A 14-year-old girl did not make it out alive. She was found on the second floor, along with two 11-year-old's who were unconscious.

The fire started at around 3:40 a.m. on Sunday. When firefighters arrived on the scene, a 27-year-old woman and another teenager had escaped from the house. They are in stable condition. But the thing that was missing from the home that would have made a big difference was a smoke detector.

Deputy Chief John Sudnik, FDNY: "No smoke detectors. It would have most definitely alerted the victims to the fact that there was a fire. I believe because there were no smoke detectors there was a delayed discovery of the fire and, unfortunately, the three victims were found on the second floor."

In total, five people were hurt in this fire -- one fatally.

There is no word yet on the cause of the fire.
