Saint Patrick's Day has proven to be full of positive news for "Dino" Mahaffey and family. He has been listed in "critical" condition since his arrival at the Washington Hospital Center on February 22, 2004, and today Doctors upgraded his condition to "serious." In addition to having his dialysis treatments discontinued, his feeding tube was removed as well. While it was not a traditional Irish meal, Dino was able to eat and drink for the first time. He had a soft drink and a meal consisting of chicken and mashed potatoes. The Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist that performed a procedure yesterday to evaluate the healing process on Dino's lungs and airway reported positive results. Dino continues to be able to sit up in his hospital bed and communicates by head/hand gestures and by writing notes. The grafts performed on his hands last week appear to be successful and healing.
