Prince George's County, Maryland Lt. Critically Burned Continues To Show Improvement
Fire Lieutenant Elmer "Dino" Mahaffey's condition continues to show improvement. While still listed in critical condition, the family is encouraged by a succession of several good days during what has been a roller coaster ride of changing medical conditions for Dino and emotions for those concerned for him. On Thursday, March 11, 2004, Dania Mahaffey met with the media at Fire/EMS Station 22 in Tuxedo-Cheverly. In her first public comments, Dania stated, "We are taking one day at a time -- one day at a time because anything can happen." She continued saying, "He's definitely a fighter. He has come a long way and he has a long road to go. I feel in my heart that he is going to pull through this..."
The Mahaffey family continues to be humbled by the outpouring of prayers and concern for Dino during his recovery. Hundreds of e-mails from the public have arrived in support of the family. Dania Mahaffey thanked the staff at the Burn Unit of the Washington Hospital Center for the excellent care that Dino has been receiving.
A medical procedure was performed this week on the burned hands of Lt. Mahaffey, with apparent success.
"My biggest hope is that one day Dino will be able to be my son's little league baseball and football coach," said Dania Mahaffey.
