Two fires broke out over the weekend in the same place beneath the New Jersey Turnpike in Jersey City.
The first, at around 6:20 p.m. Saturday, forced the closure of Interchange 14C for two hours while firefighters battled a blaze that broke out after a lit cigarette was tossed from the highway onto some rubbish and railroad ties at 10th and Brunswick streets, said Jersey City firefighter Andrew Johnson, a spokesman for the department.
"We received a report of a large volume of smoke," Johnson said yesterday. "It required us to redirect traffic off the Turnpike."
