(New York-WABC, March 14, 2004) -- There was a huge gathering of lifesavers on Sunday morning. Hundreds of emergency personnel gathered at Shea Stadium for a mock disaster drill.

The disaster in Madrid is a perfect example of why it is so important for us to always be prepared and this is why Sunday morning's drill was scheduled. The City Office of Emergency Management says Sunday's mock terror experiment is the largest in city history.

Like a disaster drill in Brooklyn last May, it involved a simulated emergency with several casualties. The exercise is to test police, firefighters, and medical experts on how prepared they are to respond to a major disaster. There was chaos and major explosions. But people in the area had nothing to worry about.

Last November, a similar drill was staged on the port of Newark waterfront. It involved the simulated explosion of a cargo container and a hazardous material emergency. Six hundred workers participated.

One thousand people took part in the stadium drill that started at 11 a.m. and lasted several hours. Most of the search and recovery action took place inside the stadium and in the parking lots.
