It's a day to remember for a Lexington firefighter. He's received a special recognition.

The Lexington fire department has had its share of sorrow this year after losing one of its own during the February standoff.

However, today was a day for celebration as they named the Firefighter of the Year.

A positive attitude, dedication and courage--all qualities these firefighters display on a day-to-day basis.

There were six nominees recongnized, but one rose to the top--Lt. Wade Miracle.

"There's no comparison in terms of satisfaction that we get. We know we're appreciated. Just people waving at us when they bring their kids by the station--that lets us know that we're appreciated."

Miracle wasn't always fighting fires. He started as a Fayette County teacher. "I truly enjoyed teaching and I miss it, but some guys came out and talked to the students one day and for whatever reason, what they were saying just clicked and I had to apply."

Miracle's family was there to share in the special ceremony. His wife Sally Miracle, "I'm proud of him. I'm proud of all the firefighters. I've always respected them."

Miracle remains humble. He knows he can't do his life-saving work alone. "Firefighting is a team effort. It's not one individual. It takes the dedication of many to accomplish one goal of fire service and that's being there when the community needs it."

Lt. Miracle did work with and was friends with fallen Lt. Brenda Cowan and he also knows the firefighter who was injured. It's been a tough year, but Miracle says it's something he loves and expects to be doing for another 20 years.
