Lt. Brenda Cowan rode on an engine out of fire station 18 on Old Richmond Road.
Firefighters are mourning the loss of one of their own. The flag at the station is at half-staff .
Most firefighters are just too upset to talk about what happened. The only way they can describe their feeling is "numb" as they think about what happened to their former colleague.
Inside the firehouse Friday night, Brenda's name remained on a chalkboard and her coat was still where she left it when the initial call came in. But, Friday night, the engine returned without its fallen comrade.
As Cowan's colleagues kept up with the tense situation on television, they could only think of their friend, whose life had been taken trying to save the life of another.
Firefighters we spoke with say Cowan had the attitude that she would never, ever quit, no matter what she was doing.
She never let the fact that she was one of the only female firefighters bother her. She never used it as an excuse. She's definitely someone they will miss terribly.
As firefighters mourn the loss of one of their own, they're pulling for another. Firefighter Jim Sandford was also shot.
He was in stable condition at the UK Medical Center Friday night. It is not known where he was hit.
