BARSTOW, Calif. (AP) -- A fiery chain-reaction crash on an interstate linking Los Angeles and Las Vegas killed four people Friday and injured others, police said. Traffic was backed up for miles in the Mojave Desert.
``The accident involved three big rigs and two cars,'' California Highway Patrol officer Kevin Healy said. ``The initial big rig hit the rear of a passenger car, which hit another big rig, then the passenger car, and so on.''
Interstate 15, the main route between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, was expected to be closed until at least midnight. The highway is usually heavily traveled on Fridays with Nevada-bound traffic.
The crash occurred about five miles south of Barstow.
Healy said several people were taken by helicopter and ambulance to hospitals but none were in critical condition.
