The next time you light up a cigarette, New York lawmakers want to make sure at the very least its not a fire hazard.

Starting today, New York will become the first state that requires tobacco companies to sell the new "Fire Safety" cigarettes.

Next to the bar code of each pack will be a tiny mark a dash, an asterisk or a diamond which will indicate that the cigarettes will go out on their own if they are not puffed on regularly.

The law is aimed at cutting down on the number of smoking-related fires.
