Fire investigators are searching for the cause of a deadly house fire that killed an entire family in Caledonia.
Fire crews were called to the 300 block of Vine Street in Caledonia just after 5:00 a.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, they found a home fully engulfed in flames.
Fire investigators tell 24 Hour News 8 flames were confined to the lower floor where the fire started. They say smoke is what killed 32-year-old Kelly Jo Rowland and her two children, 13-year-old Joshua Moomau, and 14-year-old Meagan Moomau. The teenagers died at the scene while their mother died at a hospital Tuesday night.
Caledonia Fire Chief Brian Bennett told 24 Hour News 8 that there were a lot of flames and smoke, but his crew knocked the blaze down and quickly located Rowland and her two children inside the home. Rowland and her Meagan were found in a bedroom together while Joshua was found in a hallway.
Fire crews say when they went in for the rescue, much of the furniture had been tipped over or moved out of place, and they're not sure why. They also found one smoke detector in the house, but it was not working.
Investigators say, so far, the fire doesn't look suspicious. They are still looking for a cause and say right now nothing is off limits including the possibility of an electrical fire that may have started in an office in the home.
