CABLE, Ohio (AP) -- A metal pipe used to fire potatoes as projectiles exploded in this western Ohio village, killing one man and hospitalizing three others.

Champaign County Coroner Josh Richards said excess gunpowder and possibly a potato getting stuck in the pipe started the explosion.

``They were playing with this so-called potato gun, which is essentially a pipe bomb,'' Richards said. ``The metallic tubing exploded, essentially causing shrapnel to go flying everywhere.''

Kyle Thompson, 21, of Broadway, was killed in the explosion Saturday night.

Judd Coffey, 31, of Cable, and Jason Anderson, 22, of Marysville, were taken to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton where Coffey was listed in serious condition on Monday and Anderson was in fair condition.

Robert Kiser, 48, of Cable, was listed in good condition at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.

Cable is about 35 miles northwest of Columbus.
