The Penrose Volunteer Fire Department mourns the loss of one of their own.

Tuesday night's accident on HWY 115 killed Michael Lynch, 32. He is the first to die in the line of duty in the history of this all-volunteer fire department.

Lynch was directing traffic at a minor accident when he was hit and killed by a passing car.

"Its definitely, definitely a traumatic incident to the department like I said we're losing a man and we're losing an awful good one." Says Penrose Fire Department Captain Calvin Sunderman.

Sunderman goes on to say Lynch was doing everything right, including wearing a reflective vest.

Lynch had been with the fire department just eight months. He loved going to the local elementary school to teach children about fire safety.

When he wasn't on duty with the fire department Lynch worked at Fort Carson. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

"He was an outstanding person great fire fighter good family man. To sum it up he was one of our best and he will be greatly missed for sure." Sunderman says.

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the accident.
