Emergency personnel and firefighters remove Allan Carter from the scene of an accident Friday. He was driving a tow truck pulling a dump truck that crashed into a building.

A tow truck pulling a dump truck full of rocks crashed into an abandoned nightclub Friday in the 1600 block of Northeast 28th Street, authorities said.

Fire Battalion Chief Bill Pearson said the wrecker driver appeared to have lost control while going down a hill.

Police Sgt. Tim Ellis said the driver, Allan Carter, 41, was in critical condition at John Peter Smith Hospital.

A passenger, Steven Wright, 37, crawled away from the wreckage and was also taken to John Peter Smith.

Javier Quintero, 18, said he was working outside next door at Perez Auto Sales when he heard tires screech. He said the truck appeared to be going about 30 to 40 mph but he thought that the weight the wrecker was pulling caused it to jackknife.

Quintero said the driver may have swerved to avoid other cars that were stopped at a red light
