Forget the hospital. A baby girl came into the world at a Hartford firehouse Thursday. It happened just after 2:30 in the afternoon. The expectant father called 9-1-1 when he started thinking he and his wife were not going to make it to the hospital. Dispatch operator Constance Lawson guided them to the firehouse on Blue Hills Avenue, while at the same time alerting the fire department and calling for an ambulance to head to the station.
When the mom and dad-to-be pulled up the crew at Engine Company 14 and Ladder Company 4 were all set and helped emergency responders deliver a little girl.
Her name is Alexie.
Lawson is a 22-year-veteran radio telephone operator. Her boss, City of Hartford Dispatch Center Director Gary Stango, said in a news release Lawson "is a tribute to the dedicated and experienced unsung heroes of our emergency response system." He congratulated all the emergency personnel involved in the delivery.
