CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- A Springville volunteer firefighter is charged with drunken driving - in a fire truck.

Brian Gehl, 37, was arrested by Linn County sheriff's deputies at 9 p.m. on May 28, court records said. His blood-alcohol level was 0.158 percent.

An open can of beer and three unopened cans were found on the truck, Sheriff Don Zeller said.

Gehl was not driving the truck to a fire, Fire Chief Kevin Hulett said.

``There was simply a truck sitting outside, and he made the call to get in it and take it for a drive,'' Hulett said. ``It's certainly something that's not condoned.''

The Fire Department does not have a written policy for operating equipment while intoxicated, but Gehl may face disciplinary action, Hulett said.

``He basically said he was sorry to ruin my weekend,'' Hulett said. ``What do you tell the chief when you've been pulled over by the deputies?''

Springville is 13 miles east of Cedar Rapids.
