CHAMBERY, France (AP) -- A traffic tunnel through the mountains between France and Italy was closed briefly Saturday after a truck caught fire, but nobody was injured, officials said.

Security services at the Frejus tunnel evacuated about 30 people who took refuge in fireproof shelters when a small fire broke out in a truck's braking system, according to the National Center for Road Information.

The eight mile tunnel through the Alps has fire refuges set up every 1,000 feet. The passage was shut down Saturday for about two and a half hours.

France and other European countries have boosted security measures in traffic tunnels since a 1999 truck fire in another mountain passage linking France and Italy, the Mont Blanc tunnel. That blaze killed 39 people.
