February 19, 2004 -- Scores of firefighters struggled more than 10 hours and five were injured yesterday bringing this smoky blaze under control at a Brooklyn warehouse in the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge.
Authorities said the fire began just before 3:30 a.m. at a vacant, four-story warehouse on Water Street between Bridge and Gold streets.
The fire was initially confined to the first two floors but soon spread throughout the building, the FDNY said.
Fire Department officials said 168 firefighters used 39 trucks, ladders and other pieces of equipment. Five firefighters were injured.
One was taken to New York Hospital burn center and another was taken to Long Island College Hospital. Three were treated at the scene of the fire.
