A 71-year-old woman was killed by a fire that ripped through her Harlem kitchen yesterday morning, authorities said.
December 31, 2003 -- A 71-year-old woman was killed by a fire that ripped through her Harlem kitchen yesterday morning, authorities said.

Shirley Hargrove was found unconscious in the hallway of her first-floor apartment at 223 West 139th St. shortly after the blaze began at 9 a.m. She was pronounced dead a short time later.

Officials suspect Hargrove was killed by the fire's heavy smoke. It was unclear exactly how the blaze began.

Hargrove's building is in the landmark Striver's Row section of Harlem.
