TRENTON - A man using a blow torch to cut apart a vehicle in an East Trenton salvage yard was badly burned yesterday when fumes from the gasoline tank exploded, the fire department said.

John Powell, 57, was in critical condition yesterday evening at a Philadelphia hospital's burn unit. He was injured at about 12:10 p.m. at a salvage and towing yard at Poplar and Taylor streets.

Acting Battalion Chief Qareeb Bashir said Powell was salvaging parts from a van that still had its gasoline tank. The fumes ignited, "And unfortunately he was right in the middle of it."
