(Harlem-WABC, November 1, 2003) -- Big problems for folks using the subway this weekend. A fire on the tracks is disrupting service. And it's going to take all weekend to get the problems fixed.

At least half a million people were effected by what happened on Friday. And if you are riding the subways today, it is the same situation.

The trouble started with an electrical fire at the 110th Street and Lenox Avenue station Friday. Smoke filled the station, disrupting service on the 2 and 3 lines. Authorities say a cable shorted out, damaging hundreds of wires that control signals and track switches. Thousands of people had to be evacuated.

Crystal Rivera, Bakery Worker: "I just saw a whole bunch of firefighters, trucks, and people coming in and out. I was chaos here."

The electrical fire broke out in the northbound track of the number 2 line just below 110th Street. But firefighters encountered a problem with another cable at 103rd Street.

Chief William Tanzosh, FDNY: "It's a problem with the system obviously that involves more than just one area in the tunnel and in that station."

Here's what you need to know:

  • Number 2 train service will operate on the 5 line between Nevins Street in Brooklyn and 149th Street and Grand Concourse in the Bronx.
  • Number 3 service between New Lots Ave. and 137th Street/Broadway.
  • Number 5 service into East 241 Street and White Plains Road.
  • Number 5 shuttle between East 180th Street and Dyre Avenue.
The bad news is that officials do not expect service to return to normal until late Sunday night or early Monday morning.
