Ohio Firefighters Struggle To Contain House Blaze

Jan. 23, 2004
A stubborn fire heavily damaged a Tri-State home Friday morning. Firefighters appeared to lose water pressure several times as the fire flared up.

Bitterly cold temperatures and frozen fire hydrants hampered firefighters' efforts to extinguish a stubborn in a Tri-State home Friday morning.

The fire was reported just after 9 a.m. in the 4600 block of Layhigh Road in Butler County's Morgan Township, WLWT Eyewitness News 5 reported.

The two-story home burned for about 90 minutes before fighters were able to gain control.

Footage from WLWT's Sky 5 helicopter showed water being trucked in from nearby ponds.

Firefighters lost water pressure several times as the tanks used to hold trucked-in water emptied. A water source was as close as a half-mile away, but it was one of several that were frozen.

Firefighters were forced to travel up to three miles away to haul water to the scene, WLWT reported. "All the hydrants are frozen," Morgan Township firefighter J.R. Wood said. "Everything that could've gone wrong has gone wrong as far as being able to supply water."

Water on the street surfaces froze quickly, which made the firefighters' task even more difficult, Wood said.

One person was in the home when the fire started. That person was able to escape and call for help.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Fire crews from Morgan Township, Reily Township, Ross Township and Millville responded to the fire.
