Maryland Apartment Fires Displace Dozens of Residents

Five dozen Rockville residents need somewhere to spend the holidays after flames forced them to flee from their homes around 3:30 a.m. Monday.

About 100 firefighters battled the thee-alarm blaze at the Fireside Apartments in the 700 block Monroe Street. They managed to rescue six people off the top floor of the building. Four suffering from smoke inhalation were taken to a nearby hospital.

An hour before that, Prince George's County firefighters were on the scene of a two-alarm fire on the 5,600 block of Whitfield Chapel Road in Lanham. Authorities say two buildings were evacuated after being gutted by the blaze.

Some residents jumped from second-floor balconies to escape the flames.

Prince George's County Fire officials say one man had to be hospitalized after cutting his arm and a woman was hospitalized with a broken leg.

Both fire remain under investigation. There's no word on the cost of the damage.
