This fire has been going since 6:45 a.m. this morning. It is a three-alarm fire in a five story apartment building at the intersection of North Fifth Street and Sussex Street in downtown Newark.
Firefighters arrived on the scene around 6:45 a.m. and this fire went to three alarms in 15 minutes. The high winds are fanning these flames up to 30 feet in the air. It is also blowing burning debris down onto neighboring streets and down onto adjacent Interstate 280.
The building was partially occupied around the time the fire began. Families have been evacuated and there is no word of injuries.
The fire's affecting traffic: Eastbound I-280 at exit 13 (6th and First Avenue) in Newark was shut down for awhile, and delays built up to before exit 9 just before 9:00am. Westbound delays stretched to the Jersey turnpike.
