RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (AP) -- A blaze that erupted in a tall pile of crushed automobiles was extinguished Tuesday by firefighters nearly 24 hours after it started, officials said.

``They have rolled up the hoses and they have gone home,'' said Kelley Larson, a spokeswoman for the Rancho Cucamonga Fire Department.

More than 100 firefighters from several agencies worked on the blaze at Pacific Coast Recycling that erupted Monday afternoon and sent black plumes of smoke into the air.

The air surrounding the blaze was tested by the South Coast Air Quality Management District to determine if any toxic pollutants were airborne, said agency spokesman Sam Atwood. None of the tests found samples beyond state-mandated safety levels, Atwood said.

The cause of the blaze remained under investigation.
