A Miami firefighter shot his wife in the head, killing her inside a North Miami home Tuesday afternoon, police said.

A few hours after the shooting, firefighter Davis Dorvil walked into North Miami police headquarters and turned himself in.

Police say the 29-year-old Dorvil and his wife of five years were arguing inside a relative's home at 1350 NE 129th St. shortly after 2 p.m.

Inside, officers found Herminouse Richemond Dorvil, 27, bleeding from a bullet wound in the head.

She was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The children were inside the home, as were other family members, when Dorvil shot his wife, police said.

The Dorvils had been staying at the relative's house temporarily.

Their youngest child, a girl, is 10 months old. Their two boys are both younger than 5.

Herminouse Dorvil, a graduate of Edison Senior High and Barry University, worked as a substitute teacher at nearby Natural Bridge Elementary before the birth of her daughter.

''She was the most respectful person you ever met,'' recalled friend Vavanne Destin.

Dorvil was just starting his career as a firefighter, graduating from the city's fire college last year, and just a few days shy of completing his probationary period.

''He had one week left,'' said Ignatius E. Carroll, a department spokesman. Dorvil had worked at several stations as part of his training.

Today, counselors would be visiting those stations to talk to the firefighters who worked with Dorvil.

''This is your home away from home, and you really bond with your fellow firefighters. That's where you get that brotherhood,'' Carroll said. ``This is going to have a tremendous impact.''
