NEW YORK (AP) -- An off-duty firefighter was arrested for allegedly punching a police officer in the face while running from a bar fight.

Two officers on patrol were flagged down early Saturday by a man on Staten Island who said he had been in an argument with two other men and that the men had also pounded their fists on his car, police said.

He then pointed out the men to the officers, but as they approached, one of the men, off-duty firefighter David Gonzalez, ran off, police said.

As Gonzalez scaled a fence, he allegedly punched the officer who was chasing him, leaving him with a minor cut.

Gonzalez was arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and trespassing. He joined the Fire Department last year and is assigned to Engine 76 in Manhattan, officials said.
