LE MARS, Iowa (AP) -- A fire that destroyed part of a grain elevator business was still smoldering on Monday, two day after it started.
Firefighters were called to the Le Mars Agri-Center Saturday night. Flames and thick black smoke could be seen for blocks as some 60 firefighters fought to keep the fire under control.
One elevator and a nearby building were gutted, but firefighters were able to stop major damage to a second elevator and a storage building, which were attached to the burning elevator.
``We wanted to make sure it didn't get into the storage building, which had a bunch of chemicals,'' Fire Chief Wayne Schipper said.
No one in the Agri-Center buildings at the time of the fire, and no one was hurt.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
``We're looking down on the bottom, in the basement area right inside there,'' Schipper said.
