Fomer New Jersey Firefighter Gets Three Years For Arson

May 29, 2004
Michael Kleinfelder, a former lieutenant with the National Park Fire Dept., uttered "Sorry" before he was sentenced to to three years in state prison for setting fire to an abandoned house.

WOODBURY -- "Sorry."

That was the only word Michael Kleinfelder uttered Friday before Judge Walter Marshall sentenced him to three years in state prison for setting fire to an abandoned house in National Park on March 31, 2003.

Kleinfelder, a 24-year-old National Park resident, was a lieutenant with the National Park Fire Department when he admitted to setting fire to the abandoned house on Woodlawn Avenue so the department would have something to do. Kleinfelder pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit arson and official misconduct in connection with an arson.

National Park Fire Chief Dennis Kappler, reached by phone Friday after the sentencing, recalled last year's fire and said the department fought it for three to four hours that night.
