October 1, 2003 -- Rescue workers on Long Island are searching land and sea for a missing Boogie boarder who vanished in the surf east of Jones Beach.
Police and Coast Guard helicopters were scouring the waters off Gilgo Beach in Suffolk County and police cars were patrolling the sand in an effort to find Dennis Dunn, 46, of Huntington, who disappeared Monday night while surfing with his nephew.
Suffolk Police Marine Bureau Lt. Thomas Martorano said Dunn's nephew noticed he was missing and called 911.
Martorano said Dunn was wearing a partial wetsuit and the board has not been found, prompting hope that Dunn could survive longer in the relatively warm waters and that he "could be holding on" to the missing board somewhere in the ocean.
