There is a special relevance between Chief Meara’s performance, the USS Philippine Sea and the FDNY.

From the decks of the United States Navy Guided Missile Cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) Chief Petty Officer George Meara, took advantage of his family ties with the FDNY, years of military service and training and just being in the right place at the right time to be able to pay back the terrorists in a very special way for the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The first surface launched Tomahawk missile was fired from the USS Philippine Sea on October 7, 2001 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Chief Meara
