TOKYO (AP) -- A man hurled an explosive into a bar in Japan on Monday, killing himself and injuring eight others, police and fire officials said.

The man threw the explosive into Club Bold, a bar in Kitakyushu City, about 530 miles southwest of Tokyo, injuring six women and two men inside, police spokesman Yoshikaze Iwaki said.

The club's manager restrained the man, who died of heart and lung failure at the hospital about an hour later, police said.

National broadcaster NHK reported that the bar strictly refused business dealings with gangsters and that police suspect the incident may have been in retaliation for this policy.

Kyodo News said the man threw a gasoline bomb into the bar, but police said they were still investigating the type of explosive he used.
