Cedar Grove, NY -- A fire ripped through an apartment building in Cedar Grove this morning and several tenants had to be evacuated.Residents at 175 Ridge Road said they had to endure the blackout for about 12 hours last week and now they have to deal with not having a home. That is because a fire broke out in their building around 1:30 a.m. Monday.
Around 12 families are homeless now and their building has been condemned indefinitely. Officials say the structure of the building is not safe. It took 40 firefighters including ones from neighboring towns to put the blaze out.
The fire was contained within 30 minutes. Luckily, there were no injuries.
Joe Lipari, Cedar Grove Fire Department: "It appears that the fire started in the kitchen area. They are still investigating the cause. But the fire was knocked down in the room of origin."
Officials say they don't know when the families will be able to go back home. The Red Cross is assisting some of them. The cause of this fire is unknown.
