Police are now saying that excessive speed was a factor in this morning's deadly crash. The driver of the Toyota Camry was a 20-year-old man. He was killed instantly along with three of his friends. Two others are in serious condition at the Jamaica Medical Center.
The accident happened just after midnight on the Jackie Robinson Parkway. Police say the greenToyota Camry was speeding heading westbound on parkway when it careened out of control and smashed into a tree. The force of the crash was so powerful, the front of the car is practically unrecognizable. A piece of the tree was wedged into the grill. After hitting the tree, the vehicle then burst into flames. There were six people inside the vehicle. Initially, police shutdown the parkway in both directions as investigators went over the crash site near Exit 6, Metropolitan Avenue.
By 4:00 a.m, the parkway had opened in the eastbound direction.
Around 5:30 a.m., police reopened the parkway in the westbound direction. Also, several officers went to the hospital in connection with the accident, but details were not given about their injuries.
Police released two of the names of those killed in the car accident this morning. The victims were 28-year-old Alilexis Guzman of Brooklyn and 20-year-old Diony Richez of Freeport, Long Island. The other two people killed this morning were described as a 20-year-old man and a woman in her twenties.
Police say they will have to wait for toxicology reports to see if alcohol was a factor in this fatal crash.
