Albemarle Firefighter Recovers From Mountain Biking Accident

"The firefighter was riding on a remote trail in Walnut Creek Park when he struck a tree,"said Albemarle Fire Chief Dan Eggleston."

An Albemarle County,City of Charlottesville off-duty firefighter injured in a mountain biking accident is on the road to recovery.

The trail was approximately 4 miles from the road.We had quicker access from the nearby lake.First Responding apparatus was Scottsville Rescue 705,Scottsville Water Rescue Team (including two boats and Chief 10.

The call was upgraded and North Garden Brush36,and Monticello Engine 111 for ALS responded. Bringing the total of response crews to Scottsville Rescue,North Garden Volunteer,Monticello Fire & Rescue,and Albemarle Fire Administration.

Rescuers in a infalliable Avon and an aluminum flat bottom boat headed out across the lake.Upon reaching the shore they then had to hike into the woods,provide aid,then hike back,travel in the boats,and then transport patient to hospital.The firefighter was taken to UVA hospital with difficulty in breathing,possible broken arm and broken ribs."

The rescue operation took about two hours.
