Authorities were called to the 7800 block of England Drive about 2 p.m. They found six people trapped on a balcony.

Firefighters started to set up a ladder for the trapped people, but another team was able to extinguish the fire in the basement. After they cleared away the smoke, the firefighters let the occupants just come down the building's stairway.

The fire knocked out the building's electricity. The fire damage was limited to the basement's storage area.

Merriam and Shawnee firefighters worked with Overland Park. Nobody appears to have been injured. The fire department doesn't know what started the fire.
