LOUISVILLE - Three people were injured yesterday, including one who leapt from a second-floor window, as flames raced through a building with apartments, a fire official said.

Louisville Metro Fire Capt. Ronel Brown said two men suffered life-threatening injuries and a firefighter was treated for a cut hand.

Jerry Herron was reported in critical condition with burns, and Kenny Woodworth was listed in serious condition at University of Louisville Hospital. James Wathen was treated and released.

The firefighter's identity was not available. He was treated at the scene.

Thermal imaging equipment had to be used to locate one of the victims and the firefighter who went inside to attempt a rescue, Brown said.

The three-alarm fire in a building just west of downtown at 26th and Market Street broke out at 2:44 a.m. and was brought under control in about two hours by 97 firefighters, Brown said.

The building housed Doc's Bottom Dollar Furniture on the first floor with apartments above, Brown said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
