Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Monday signed off on a blue ribbon panel's suggestion to shut down a total of eight fire companies in three boroughs, and union officials say the closure notices are already out.

Union officials say the Fire Department has notified them, as well as City Council members from the eight affected districts, to be prepared for the closings in 45 days.
