Date/Time of Occurrence: April 06, 2003 , 9:45 p.m. Nature of Occurrence: Commercial Structure Fire Location: 12th St./C St. City: Sacramento Business Name: Condemned Building
At 9:45 p.m. the Sacramento Fire Department responded to a report of smoke from the abandoned and condemned Old Globe Mills located near the corner of 12th and C Streets. Engine 14 had a fairly large column of smoke visible from their Station. The first arriving Fire Company, Engine 2, had flames from the first and second floor of the 9-story building and called in a second alarm for additional resources.
This is one of at least three multiple alarm fires in this building over the past decade or so. The Old Globe Mills structure has been declared a dangerous building and was condemned after a four alarm fire in the early nineties. This forces Fire Fighters to not enter the building when fires start inside the complex due to unsafe building components.
An Investigator for the Sacramento Fire Department has ruled the fire cause to be arson.
The response included five Engines, three Trucks, two Medics, three Battalion Chiefs, and 13 support personnel for a total of 49 Fire Fighters.
