Subway service downtown was getting back to normal Monday afternoon, after a fire in a Lower East Side subway station forced the partial suspension of "F" and "V" train service. Officials say eleven firefighters were injured in the two alarm blaze at the station at Houston and Second Avenue.
At its height, there were more than 100 firefighters battling the blaze, which began in a tunnel near the station shortly before 1:00pm, and grew to two alarms by 1:30pm. The fire was brought under control by about 2:30pm, but firefighters were still on the scene late Monday afternoon, trying to dissapate the smoke left by the blaze.
Service on the "F" and "V" trains was restored by late Monday afternoon, but trains were still bypassing the 2nd Avenue station while officials waited for smoke to clear.
Officials say eleven firefighters were hurt, with injuries ranging from smoke inhalation to exhaustion, and one firefighter suffered a cut to the head. None of the injuries were considered life threatening.
